İşaret zamirleri konuşmacının nesne veya insanla olan münasebetini bildirirler ve Türkçe'de bu, şu, bunlar, şunlar anlamında kullanılır.
This (bu) and these (bunlar) nesne veya insanın konuşmacıya yakın olduğunu bildirir. That (şu) and those (şunlar) nesne veya insanın konuşmacıya uzak olduğunu bildirir. Bu fiziksel yakınlık ya da uzaklık olabilir. Örneğin:
- Who owns that house? (uzak) (Şu evin sahibi kim?)
- Is this John's house? (yakın) (Bu John'un evi mi?)
- Is this John's house? (yakın) (Bu John'un evi mi?)
Ya da bu psikolojik bir uzaklık da olabilir. Örneğin:
- That's nothing to do with me (uzak) (Benimle hiçbir alakası yok)
- This is a nice surprise! (yakın) (Bu ne güzel bir sürpriz!)
- This is a nice surprise! (yakın) (Bu ne güzel bir sürpriz!)
USE (KULLANIM)
► Before the noun. (İsimden önce)
- Can you see that house? (Şu evi görebiliyor musun?)
► Before the word 'one'. ('one' kelimesinden önce)
- This car looks cleaner than that one. (Bu araba, şundan daha temiz gözüküyor.)
► Before an adjective + noun. (Sıfat + isimden önce)
- Do you remember that graet day in London? (Londra'daki o mükemmel günü hatırlıyor musun?)
► Alone when the noun is 'understood'. (İsim önceden biliniyor ve anlaşılıyorsa tek başına kullanılabilir.)
- Can you see that house? (Şu evi görebiliyor musun?)
► Before the word 'one'. ('one' kelimesinden önce)

► This veya that kullanımına karar veren kişi dinleyen değil, konuşandır. Dinleyen de cevap verirken kendisine göre uzaklığı ve yakınlığı kararlaştıracaktır. Aşağıdaki örnek cümleleri inceleyiniz.
- Is this a chair? (Bu bir sandalye midir?)
- Yes, it is a chair. (Evet, o bir sandalyedir.)
- Yes, it is a chair. (Evet, o bir sandalyedir.)
- Is this a pen? (Bu bir tükenmez kalem midir?)
- No, it is not a pen. (Hayır, o bir tükenmez kalem değildir.)
